Peak Bloom Forecasts in Detail

The National Park Service has this morning issued the season’s first prediction for when the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin will reach peak bloom this year.

They predict that peak bloom will occur sometime between April 8 and 12.

Unsurprisingly given the colder than average winter, that would bring the bloom later than usual. The average peak bloom date since 1921 has been April 3, although in recent decades it has been trending earlier (since 1993 the average has been March 31). The peak bloom date last year was April 9.

It’s important to note that the predictions are subject to revision as we get closer to date. It’s not until about 10 days out that the experts feel fully confident in their predictions.
