The cherry blossoms reached peak bloom on March 17, 2024. That's the second-earliest on record.

For those who weren’t able to make it to the cherry blossoms in person this year, here’s a little project I’ve been working on: timelapse footage of Yoshino cherry blossoms blooming.

It captures about five days or so, through the peduncle elongation, puffy white, and peak bloom stages.

There are several varieties of cherry tree around and near the Tidal Basin, but the Yoshino Japanese cherry trees (Prunus × yedoensis) are the most famous and numerous.

And in case you were wondering, no, these branches weren’t torn from the protected trees at the Tidal Basin, of course!
