Cherry Blossom Watch Update: April 16, 2018

The cherry blossoms are essentially done now. You can still find some flowers on the trees, but the trees are leafing out.

The cherry blossoms reached peak bloom on March 17, 2024. That's the second-earliest on record.

The rain, wind, and thunderstorms that began yesterday and continued through today have basically finished the cherry blossoms off. You can still find some flowers on the trees, but that’s mostly a technicality–as the trees leaf out there’s now more green than pink or white, and most of the petals have been blown off the trees. As usual, there are some stragglers that still have more flowers hanging on, but most of them are getting close to being done.

The heavy, sudden rains have caused flash flooding around the area, and at high tide this morning the Potomac and Tidal Basin were swollen, with the Tidal Basin overflowing much of the walkway around the rim.

Kwanzan Cherry Blossoms

The Kwanzans are just starting to bloom. Here are some shots from this morning. I’ve seen some around town that are just a little head of these by the FDR Memorial. Stay tuned for more updates on the Kwanzans in coming days as they head into full bloom.
