Cherry Blossom Watch Update: March 29, 2016

There’s still plenty to see at the Tidal Basin. Yesterday’s rain and wind did take a toll, but the trees are holding up quite well so far.

The cherry blossoms reached peak bloom on March 17, 2024. That's the second-earliest on record.

There’s still plenty to see at the Tidal Basin this morning. Yesterday’s rain and wind did take a toll, but the trees are holding up quite well so far.

From a distance, they still look wonderful. It’s only when you get a very close that you can see that they’re definitely on their way out now. Most of the petals that were blanketing the ground after the rain yesterday have scattered in the wind, so the evidence isn’t quite so obvious. There are more green leaves appearing now, but they’re still overwhelmed by the pink flowers.

If you head down to today, you won’t be disappointed. There’s still a lingering breeze this morning that should die out later. And the sun is out, with a beautifully clear sky. Parking is relatively easy, and while there are more people out today than yesterday morning, it’s still not crowded by any stretch.

Photos From This Morning

Here’s a sense of what you can expect to see if you head down to the cherry blossoms today.

  1. Thank you so much for these day to day updates, i appreciate them so much!

i bought tickets earlier in february to come see the cherry blossoms and back then the forecast was for late march early april, i am a little disappointed that I missed the peak bloom (my flight is tomorrow night and i get in on the 31) but seeing your photos each day gives me hope that i will still see some remnants when i get there!

  2. How about this Friday, 4/1? I have booked flights from LAX, arriving IAD in the evening of Thursday 3/31. I am wondering if I should cancel the trip?

Thanks a lot for your wonderful updates and photos. I love this site. If I cannot make it this year, I will book flights later and come next year.

  3. Hello,

Me and my wife plan on bringing our dog over this weekend. Anything left at that point? There is rain Thursday and Friday I think

    • I expect there to be a lot of flowers left. They’re past their prime, of course, but there’s still plenty to see. Still, cool conditions overnight will help.
