The cherry blossoms reached peak bloom on March 17, 2024. That's the second-earliest on record.

The Kwanzans in East Potomac Park and next to the FDR Memorial aren’t really blooming yet. It is possible to find some scattered flowers out, but the vast majority of them haven’t yet popped.

The cold stretch we’re in the middle of right now is slowing things up. And the cold looks to be sticking around for a while yet, with even the potential for some snowflakes over the weekend and the risk of more freeze warnings.

Here are some shots of how the Kwanzans in East Potomac Park were looking this morning, and here’s more general information on the Kwanzan cherry blossoms, including how to find them. The ones next to the FDR Memorial were about the same stage. There is one tree next to the road by the George Mason Memorial at the foot of the 14th Street Bridge that’s a little ahead of the others, but even it isn’t yet fully out.

Yoshino Cherry Blossoms

The Yoshino cherry blossoms (otherwise known as the famous ones around the Tidal Basin) are done now. It’s not impossible to find the occasional flower still on a tree here and there, but for all intents and purposes they’ve finished flowering and are leafing over.

Here are some shots of how they look this morning.

Discussion

  1. Kwanzan Cherry Trees are truly majestic when in full bloom.

Allow me to share the close up I’ve took this Friday, April 8th.

Too bad weather have turned bad so unexpectedly, it would be an amazing weekend to photograph Kwazans in early bloom.
